Currency IS : a Medium of Exchange, a Unit of Account, Portable, Durable, Divisible, Fungible (Interchangeable - same value in your pocket as in mine) Currency IS NOT a store of value over a long period. Money shares all of the characteristics of currency but also it IS a store of value over a long time as it is made of something with intrinsic value which cannot be manufactured, such as gold. Currency has NO intrinsic value or negligible intrinsic value. Government issued currencies are called FIAT because their values are simply declared by the issuer. Nothing of value backs any fiat currency and more currency may be issued at any time, diluting the existing supply. This is the only cause of inflation. All currently circulating world currencies, including the U.S. Dollar are fiat currencies. Cryptocurrencies, on the other hand are issued on cryptographically signed, indellible ledgers and more cannot be produced after inital issuance.
One of the very different aspects of cryptocurrency vs fiat currency (e.g. U$ Dollar) is that there is no physical representation of the value such as a coin or a government issued piece of paper (physical, albeit of little intrinsic value). Instead the cryptocurrency is a cryptographically sealed and protected and openly verifiable data representation of cryptocurrency. It is present only on the blockchain of that cryptocurrency. That blockchain is on thousands, if not millions of computer systems worldwide. Each copy of that blockchain is identical up to the final common verifiable block of each chain instance. To transact on the blockchain one needs two pieces of information: 1. The PUBLIC-KEY which is openly shared and 2. the PRIVATE-key which as the name implies must never be shared as it allows the possessor to do as he wills with the encryptedcryptocurrency or other block data. The cryptocurrency wallet safely stores the PRIVATE-key and uses it to interact with the blockchain data. Basically there are three types of crypocurrency wallets: 1. Hardware wallets - physical electronic key storage devices, 2. Standalone Software Wallets which are programs that run on a computing device such as a phone or computer or 3.Browser Extension Wallets - which run as software extensions on web browsers. REMEMBER: A cryptocurrency wallet safely stores and interacts with your PRIVATE-key without revealing it. The cryptocurrency wallet does not store your cryptocurrency.
Once you have a cryptocurrency wallet working you need some cryptocurrency. This can be bought online, in-person or through a Bitcoin ATM. If you buy online or through a Bitcoin ATM you will be required to provide verifiable, government-issued photo ID in order to comply with anti-moneylaundering laws. One of the easiest ways is to buy through a centralized exchange as they can utilize ACH or Wire transfers or even debit cards from your bank. Not all exchanges are centralized, that is, they hold your and other investors assets and hold their own to allow for customers to buy and sell. With crypto currency there are decentralized exchanges which give YOU the opportunity to provide liquidity to facilitate the transaction and it is YOU who harvest the lion's share of the fees, NOT the exchange. Moreover you can lend your cryptocurrency for fees or interest in many different investment vehicles. The options and possibilities grow daily. You can even leverage your investments without risking your assets should the prices drop yet still reap all the rewards if they increase. You can also earn money by engaging in arbitrage. Don''t know how to program an arbitrage AI bot? No problem. You can rent an AI robot in exchange for a percentage of your proceeds. The possibilities grow daily. All of these opportunities are really just begining to appear.

From there I went to a startup that put the first commercial website on the internet that was hosted on a major database (Informix) that served a catalog complete with images on the database as BLOBs (Large Binary Objects). As a result I had to port cryptography libraries to OSF/1 on a DEC Alpha server. From there I spent the next 20+ years at major U.S. Telecommunication carriers supporting switch telemetry and data backbone Network Management Systems and Network Operations Centers. So my experience includes programming, DBA, Network Management, software porting, security and regulatory compliance standards development and implementation.
